Surrendering Your Pet
Surrendering a pet can be an emotional and upsetting experience. Often times, a pet is relinquished because their owner thinks they don’t have any other options or is unaware of resources that can help them to keep their pet. The Humane Society of Charlotte staff and volunteers understand how difficult this time. We are here to help you during this process.
The Humane Society of Charlotte has an Owner Surrender Program that intakes healthy/treatable animals and places them for adoption in the shelter.
The Humane Society of Charlotte strives to keep all our kennels and cat condos full of adoptable animals at all times. The priority is to utilize space for Mecklenburg County animals in desperate need. We regularly bring in dogs from Charlotte Mecklenburg Animal Care and Control.
The Humane Society of Charlotte also has the iCare Program which is a courtesy re-homing service that allows the owner to play an active role in re-homing their animal without having their animal enter into the shelter system. Please visit our dog and cat iCare Re-homing boards for more information or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
There will always be more homeless animals than we can accommodate. If you have an adoptable pet that you need to have re-homed, we recommend that you contact all rescue resources in your area. Click here for a list of rescue groups that are authorized by Charlotte Mecklenburg Animal Care and Control. Please note that most rescue groups are run by volunteers who do rescue work in their spare time and take time to respond.
Please consider finding your dog or cat another home instead of surrendering him to a shelter because it will be less stressful for your animal, allows you to play a part in uniting him with a new family, and makes additional space available for pets whose lives are at risk.
