MithiThe Shukla family has been helping us since February of 2010.  They have fostered 10 puppies to date.  All of the puppies have found their forever home.  Great fosters like the Shuklas allow us to save more animals.

Mithi wrote a wonderful story about the fostering experience. We just had to share it.   Please click here to read Mithi's story.

Melissa has volunteered with us since 2005.  Here she is with Sir Purr in our offices to promote our Adopt a Panther month.  She has logged an incredible 575 hours.  Melissa is one of our top fosters.  If you ever want the best puppies, adopt one she has fostered.  This year, Melissa is shining as a lead volunteer in our Customer Service Department - even helping to write the manual and train new volunteers.

Couldn't get everything we need done without her.  Yeah, Melissa!

Lynette has only volunteered with us since May of 2009.  Yet she has managed to rack up an astonishing 320 hours of assisting our customer service department.  She has quickly mastered the art of adoption and is also one of our foster homes.  In her spare time, Lynette is instrumental on our new Community Outreach Committee.  And here she is with her dog, Gracie adopted from us.

Patty has been organizing Angel Tree for 6 years.  Since 2000, Best Friends has been giving to rescue organizations and shelters over $20,000 a year in form of toys, food and supplies.  The Angel tree is designed to encourage pet lovers to share the spirit of the holidays and giving with animals.  In addition, Patty is a dog trainer and fly ball champion.  She shares some of her spare hours with our Animal Behavior Manager working to help our dogs become more adoptable.

Cat’s commitment spans over 12 years of volunteering at HSC. Her life’s main focus is animals and their well-being. She started by fostering felines, then last year learned how to bottle-feed abandoned kittens. Not yet at the height of the 2009 kitten season, she already has 15 kittens at home - some bottle-feeding; others eating on their own – in addition to her own pets. She’s inspired others to become bottle-feeders too, enhancing lives of tiny kittens who might not survive otherwise.  Thank you, Cat!

When it comes to our four-legged dog friends, there aren’t too many things volunteer Bettie doesn’t assist with. A dedicated volunteer since 2005, she is here at the Humane Society of Charlotte almost every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Rain or shine, Bettie lends a hand cleaning dog runs and assists our trainer who works with our canine guests several times a week. On Wednesdays, she helps transport animals to Founder’s Hall for our weekly off-site event there. Still spry in her sixties, she has been known to load dogs weighing upwards of 70 pounds all by herself.

Gary McLambGary started volunteering in September 2007 when his company sponsored one of our fundraisers. In that time, he has done Welcome Wags and Walk To Adopt and really enjoys greeting potential parents with our canine residents. What Gary enjoys most though, is taking the adoptable dogs off-site and doing special events at venues such as the SouthPark Mall and Petco where he can interact with the public, increase awareness for the shelter and get people interested in adopting our special animals. Helping solicit funds for the Humane Society of Charlotte is a joy for Gary, especially with the new Pet PALS group because, and he says it best, “we have to keep the babies well taken care of until they can find their forever homes!”

The Humane Society of Charlotte is grateful to Gary for all that he does to help our four-legged friends.

Amanda MasonMandy started volunteering with the Humane Society of Charlotte in November 2008 and she mostly volunteers at the customer service desk, Petco and at the Pet PALS events. She enjoys volunteering with the customer service team who are at the reception area when one first comes into the shelter the most because she thinks they are great group of women and she loves the interaction with the potential adopters. She also really enjoys seeing pets go home with their new families. Mandy hopes everyone gets a chance to attend a
Pet PALS event. She says that these have been a real pleasure to be involved with. “I've received so much enjoyment volunteering for the Humane Society” she says, “it is by far one of the most rewarding things I've
ever done.”

Joel ShinnOne of our tireless and most dedicated volunteers, Joel  has been helping us at the Humane Society of Charlotte since the 1990s.  He has given many hours and years of work and uncountable ‘yeses,’ including: training our Walk-to-Adopt volunteers, fostering more homeless pets than we can count.  Joel gives daily assistance at the spay/neuter clinic because he knows it is an answer to pet overpopulation.

The Humane Society of Charlotte would not be where it is today without Joel’s leadership and dedication. He never turns down an opportunity to make the difference in the life on an animal in need. He was originally a self-proclaimed dog-person but has made room in his heart for cats as well. We all are fortunate for the support he gives the Humane Society of Charlotte.

Anita helping clientsAnita began her volunteer career with the Humane Society of Charlotte in March 2007. In that time, she’s represented the Society at the Southern Women’s Show, assisted the staff in the preparation for PetPalooza and has participated in the Walk-To-Adopt program. She has also played an integral role with the daily canine play sessions.

She thoroughly enjoys getting the dogs out of their runs and facilitating their interactions with other dogs and humans. “It is so rewarding to watch a shy dog, sitting in the back of its run, transform into a social dog, playing with other dogs and interacting in a positive way” says Anita.  “If I could, I would adopt them all, but since I can’t, this is my way of giving back.”

Anita has just opened her own doggy-day-care business! “Working with the dogs at the shelter has given me great hands on experience and for that I’m grateful.”

The shelter staff is grateful to Anita for all that she does to help our four-legged friends.

Santa Dave

Dave joined us in November 2008.  And he didn't know we were going to make him the jolly old elf!  Dave not only adopted a fuzzy face from us, but also spent hours with the Spay/Neuter clinic.

He is also one of our volunteers trained in our Walk to Adopt program, so when PetCo asked us for a Santa for the dogs, Dave jumped right in.  He said it was easier being a Santa for critters with four-legs.  They don't bite

Thank you, Santa Dave.
