What to Expect from Dog Training at HSC
Good training goes well beyond “sit” and “stay.” Classes at HSC give you real insight into how your dog learns, help you recognize and reinforce positive behavior, and build the foundation for a calmer, more confident pet.
Pre-registration is required for all sessions. Proof of DHPP, Rabies, and Bordetella vaccines must be on file. Email documentation to training@humanecharlotte.org or bring it to your first class.
HSC group classes are designed for dogs in a standard social learning environment. Our sessions are not the right fit for dogs that excessively bark at other dogs or people, show extreme fear, or display signs of aggression. We’re also unable to address exclusively in-home behaviors like potty training, crate training, separation anxiety, or destructive behaviors. If your dog needs that kind of support, we recommend connecting with a certified force-free, in-home trainer.

Charlotte Dog Training FAQs
What are the benefits of pet training?
Training builds your dog’s confidence, gives you tools to address common behavior challenges, and deepens the bond between you. Dogs that have been through consistent training tend to be calmer, more focused, and better able to handle new situations.
Is my dog too old for pet training?
Not at all. Dogs can learn at any age with the right approach. Positive reinforcement works just as well for adult and senior dogs as it does for puppies.
How old does my dog have to be to start pet training?
Puppies can start training when they are sixteen weeks old. We require puppies to receive a minimum of one set of vaccines before the first class. All dogs are required to have the following vaccines to attend training classes: DHPP, Rabies, and Bordetella. Email vaccine documentation to training@humanecharlotte.org
How old does my puppy need to be to start classes?
Puppies can join classes starting at 16 weeks old, provided they’ve had at least their first round of vaccines. All dogs must have DHPP, Rabies, and Bordetella on file before attending.
Do I need to pre-register for classes?
Yes, pre-registration is required for all HSC dog training classes. Check the Dog Training Calendar for current schedules, or schedule a private session online.
What training methods does HSC use?
All training at HSC is based on positive reinforcement and behavioral science. We don’t use punishment-based techniques. Our approach is built on communication and trust between you and your dog.
What if my dog has aggression or reacts strongly to other dogs?
HSC group classes are not the right setting for dogs with aggression, extreme fear, or significant reactivity. For those situations, a certified in-home trainer is the better fit as they can work with your dog one-on-one in a controlled environment.
