Our Charlotte Cat & Kitten Adoption Process
At the Humane Society of Charlotte, we pride ourselves on being tried-and-true matchmakers. As a trusted Charlotte kitten and cat shelter, we help fur babies and pet parents fall in love through our animal adoption process.
Step 1: Find your BFF (best feline friend)
Whether you’re ready to adopt a kitten or looking for a snuggly senior cat, we recommend you first explore our listing of available cats and kittens. Think about which personality traits will suit you (e.g. friendly, vocal, good with other animals). Then, read each feline’s bio.
Step 2: Come for a visit
If you fall in love at first sight, visit our cat shelter in Charlotte, NC to meet in-person. An Adoption Counselor will ask you some questions about which pets you’re interested in, your housing situation, if you have any other animals, and more.
To adopt a cat or kitten in Charlotte, you must be 18 or older and have a valid form of identification. You will also need a valid form of payment.
Step 3: Say “I do”
After chit-chatting, the Adoption Counselor will take you to the cat adoption area for a meet-and-greet. If you’re ready to say “I do,” you’ll just need to sign some paperwork and pay an adoption fee.

Adoption fees at the Humane Society of Charlotte vary depending on the animal’s age, breed, size, personality, and more. Our variable fee structure provides us with the resources needed to create a world where there are no more homeless or unwanted animals.

Ringworm Adoption Program
Ringworm is a fungal infection commonly seen in cats. Though completely treatable, felines recover best in a home setting. Our ringworm adoption program equips pet parents with the tools and knowledge needed to treat newly adopted cats.

What To Expect After Adopting a Cat
Kitten adoption in Charlotte can be exciting – both for you and your four-legged friend. But before you break out the yarn balls and toys, understand that this transition is often overwhelming for cats.
Since felines are territorial, moving them from place to place can create stress. Though you may be eager to snuggle, give your cat time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Understand that they may hide under sofas or beds, refuse to eat, or even hiss when approached for the first few days.
To help your whiskered bud settle in, create a cozy space. A bathroom or laundry room will do the trick. Furnish the safe space with a bed, scratching posts, and a water and food bowl. You should also fill a litter box with one to two inches of litter, preferably litter they are familiar with.

No, we are open for adoptions Sunday – Thursday – 11AM – 5PM and Friday and Saturday – 11AM – 6PM.

Though scratching can be annoying and destructive, it’s an instinctive cat behavior. To protect your furniture, we recommend providing your kitty with a scratching post or two.
