Classroom Visits

We Bring Youth Programs to You!

The Humane Society of Charlotte will enhance your classroom experience with our animal and compassion-based curriculum. We can customize our presentation to incorporate the lessons you’re currently teaching or choose from one of our pre-existing programs.

  • Small group lessons
  • Lessons designed to help students to help build character, empathy, kindness, and animal knowledge

Lessons Available

  • SAFETY AROUND ANIMALS
    • Did you know 77% of dog bites come from a family or friend’s dog? This is an impactful statistic and, at HSC, we are working to lower that percentage through informative and engaging lessons that teach kids how to stay safe around all dogs by correctly reading and responding to dog body language.
  • BREED IDENTIFICATION
    •  The American Kennel Club (AKC) recognizes over 175 dog breeds. However, many animal welfare professionals estimate there to be well over 300 breeds that exist worldwide. Students will learn about a variety of different dog breeds and the stereotypes that are attached to some breeds.
  • PET CARE 101
    • The 5 Animal Freedoms are internationally accepted standards of care that affirm every living being’s right to humane treatment. Students will develop an understanding of each freedom and the connection to the essential components of owning their own pet. Students will walk away with a deepened understanding of what animal needs are and why it’s vital that these needs are met.
  • COMMUNITY SERVICE & ADVOCACY
    • Many students have a natural curiosity and fondness for animals and want to volunteer their time and efforts to support animals in their community. Through hands-on activities, students are able to make connections between animal welfare and the importance of community service. Students learn about the interconnectedness of our world and the animals we share it with. Students will unlock their power to influence change and affect our community for the better.

“HSC staff engaged our students in learning about social cues of dogs that can help us interpret how they are feeling, helping the students develop a greater sense of empathy. They also did a masterful job tying in our novel that we had just completed, Because of Winn Dixie, with the theme of empathy. It was just the right balance of learning, connecting, and sharing!”
