One Year Later: Reflecting on Hurricane Helene

One year ago, Hurricane Helene devastated Western North Carolina. Communities were left reeling, and shelters across the region were overwhelmed with animals in need of care and safe housing.

At the Humane Society of Charlotte, we knew we had to step up for our friends and neighbors in need. Thanks to strong partnerships, a committed staff, and an incredible network of volunteers and supporters, we welcomed 227 adoptable animals from storm-affected shelters into our care. By welcoming 227 furry new friends to Charlotte, shelters and rescues affected by the storms could focus on reuniting lost pets with their families as well as work to rebuild what was tragically lost.

Our Impact Since Helene

  • 227 animals transported to HSC from Western North Carolina shelters
  • Every animal received medical care, vaccinations, and behavioral support
  • Dozens were placed into foster homes, giving them comfort and stability during recovery
  • Hundreds of staff hours dedicated to safe transports, daily care, and adoption preparation

These efforts were possible because of collaboration with organizations like the ASPCA, Banfield Foundation, Pedigree Foundation, and the BISSELL Pet Foundation, as well as the support of donors and volunteers right here in Charlotte and across the country.

Adoption Stories That Inspire

Today, just a little over one year later, the animals from Helene are settled into their homes and thriving. Their journeys remind us why this work matters, as well as how grateful we are for those who continue to support our mission.

Paprika (formerly Thumper)

“Paprika (formerly Thumper, transferred from Brother Wolf Animal Rescue) has brought so much joy into my life. She loves exploring the outdoors and was so patient with my nieces and nephew over the holidays. She’s the perfect companion.”

Gene

“When we met Gene, he was timid and unsure. With care and thyroid treatment, he’s blossomed into a joyful, energetic dog. He fits right in with our other pets and is truly thriving — it’s like he’s come back to life. Thank you for all you do in caring for animals like Gene. We’re so grateful to have him in our lives, and he’s truly the best addition to our family. Please know that he is safe, loved, and living his absolute best life!”

Mochi

“Mochi is such a sweet pup and does so well with other dogs and people. He loves being outside, loves car rides, and adjusted to my family so fast. I can’t imagine life without him now."

Dixie (formerly Mummy)

“Dixie is doing great! She’s a total love and keeps us laughing with her floor-cleaning antics. She’s enjoyed watching her brothers play baseball and loves running in the yard with her fur brother. She has fit right in.”

Salad

“Salad is adjusting super well and is the sweetest girl ever. She loves staring out the window and yelling at me for pets. She’s motivated by love more than food, and we’re still finding toys she likes. Overall, she’s doing great and seems so happy. I love her so much and am so glad to have her by my side!”

Isla (formerly Lolly)

“Isla is doing wonderfully! She still has some anxiety with loud noises, but she has come so far. She’s excelling at training, loves the dog park, and now proudly claims the couch she once feared. She’s the best!”

Each adoption represents resilience, hope, and the strength of community.

Looking Ahead

While the storm may be behind us, the need for resources and preparedness is still ongoing – here and in Western NC. The Pet Help Center at HSC is now a vital part of ensuring families and pets stay together — in times of crisis and every day.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who gave their time, donated supplies, opened their homes, or made a gift to support this effort. You helped us turn a moment of crisis into hundreds of second chances.

For those who would like to support rebuilding what was lost in the western part of our beloved state, we recommend connecting with our friends at Brother Wolf Animal Rescue.

Thank you for standing with us and with the people and pets of Western North Carolina. When the next animal needs us, your gift makes sure we can be there.
